The Role of Artemia Nauplii in Seabream Larvae Development at Dagon Marine Finfish Hatchery

At Dagon Marine Finfish Hatchery, ensuring our seabream larvae's healthy growth and development is a top priority. A critical component of this process is precisely adjusting live feed to match the developing larvae’s needs. One of the most important live feeds in this early stage is Artemia nauplii—tiny, newly hatched crustaceans that play a vital role in larval nutrition.

What Are Artemia Nauplii?

Artemia nauplii, commonly known as brine shrimp, are a staple live feed in aquaculture. When they hatch, these nauplii measure between 250 and 400 microns long, a stage referred to as nauplii instar 1. Remarkably, these tiny organisms can double their size in less than 24 hours, growing up to 1500 microns in length.

Feeding Seabream Larvae: Matching Size to Need

In our hatchery, we synchronize the size of the live feed with the seabream larvae’s developing mouth opening width. Initially, our larvae feed on nauplii instar 1, which is the perfect size for them a few weeks post-hatching. This stage ensures that the larvae can easily consume the nauplii, providing them with the necessary nutrients to support their rapid growth.

Their dietary needs evolve as the larvae mature and approach the post-larval stage. At this point, we begin feeding them with nauplii instar 2-grown nauplii that range between 600 and 800 microns in length. This transition is crucial to accommodate the growing larvae's larger mouth size and increasing nutritional demands.

Enhancing Nutritional Value

To further support the healthy development of our seabream larvae, we enrich our Artemia nauplii with supplements high in fatty acids. This enrichment process boosts the nutritional profile of the live feed, ensuring that our larvae receive a well-rounded diet that promotes strong growth and development.

At Dagon Marine Finfish Hatchery, our meticulous attention to the size and nutritional content of our live feed demonstrates our commitment to producing healthy, thriving seabream. By tailoring our feeding practices to the specific needs of the larvae, we set the foundation for their successful transition into mature fish.
